SALEM -- After a tough loss to Pitman last Friday, the Salem field hockey team felt it had a lot to prove when it hosted Pennsville on Tuesday.

"I have a young team this year, and lost a lot of my solid defense players when they graduated," Salem head coach Donna O'Leary said.

The young team was able to pull together against a winless Pennsville team and come away with a 2-0 victory on two goals by Nylah Seals.

"I was very proud of myself and my team today," Seals said. "After the upset against Pitman (a 1-0 loss), we all really stepped it up today. We communicated a lot and our passing was on point."

Salem pushed hard for a goal in the first half, but came up empty as the teams went into the break scoreless.

Seals, who was able to maintain control of the ball throughout most of the game, broke through to snap the scoreless tie when she scored a few minutes into the second half.

Salem remained focused on Pennsville's goal during the last 30 minutes. The Rams dug in and showed their strength with an array of solid passes and shots. Even after Pennsville recovered the ball and attempted a shot at Salem's goal, the Rams turned up the heat and dug in, gaining control of the ball and powering it up the field toward the opposing net.

With five minutes left, Seals delivered a commanding hit, scoring her second goal to ice the victory.

"It felt amazing," Seals said. "I tried my best and it showed."

Tiasia Tatem made six saves for Salem (5-3-1). Sabrina Sams made 10 saves for Pennsville (0-8)

O'Leary was very pleased with the afternoon's performance.

"We played as a unit today," she said. "We were a team instead of having choppy plays. I am very proud of these girls. They performed like they've been playing together for 10 years."
