Salem High School seeks honorees for its Military Wall of Honor

SALEM — Salem High School has developed a Military Wall of Honor that recognizes all the graduates that have served or are serving their nation in any of the military services.

So far, the Military Wall of Honor has graduates ranging from the 1930s to 2009.

“It gives the people a chance to share their experiences,” said Lisa Mutter, teacher-librarian and SCSD webmaster. “It is a wonderful way for the folks who have gone through the military to talk to our students and show the dedication and the idea that it is something they can do.”

The Military Wall of Honor started two years ago inside the school and has been on the website for one year.

“The students help find people to go on the wall and website,” said Mutter.

Mutter got the idea after seeing a bulletin board that Woodstown High School did for their military alumni including her two daughters.

“I have two daughters in the military,” said Mutter. “Because of that I am aware of the sacrifice they make.”

The wall is to honor as well as help show the students that being in the military is honorable, that it is something Salem High School alumni have already done or are doing and lastly that it is something they can do.

“The graduates have been contacted through word of mouth mostly,” said Mutter. “Hopefully, being on the website, it will get big and friends and family will see it and tell others about it.”

The Military Wall of honor is also chance for veterans to share their stories and the history with students at Salem High School.

You can visit the Military Wall on their website, www.salemnj.org/schools/salem_high_school/alumni/military_alumni/, or visit copies of pictures that are on display in the Salem High School Granville S. Thomas Learning Resource Center.

To add your name to the Wall of Honor, send a military photo and information (graduate's name, rank, branch of service and year of graduation from Salem High School) to: Salem High School, Military Wall of Honor, 219 Walnut St., Salem NJ 08079, Attn: Lisa Mutter.
