How "Georgie" got his name.
Jim Fogg and his brother Charles played trumpet for four years in the Salem High School Band. Charles graduated in 1970 and James in 1972.
Jim had a Dorset Ram named George as a part of his 4-H project. The idea of a live SHS mascot was his idea, and his parents helped make it a reality for four years; his mom made a banner for George to wear to match the SHS band uniforms.
Every football game from September 1968 through November 1971 their father would take George to the game for halftime. The police and security guards, including at every away game, always opened the gates to the field as soon as George arrived.
During half-time, while the home & visitor marching bands, majorettes, and color guards performed their routines on the field, Mr. Fogg would lead George around the infield track. George had a good disposition for a ram and the students could see George up close and touch him.
The students, as well as those of the other high schools in the football conference, including the police, security guards and support people recognized George as the live mascot of the Salem High School Rams.
We thought it only fitting to name our NEW SALEM RAM after this living legend from the 1970's. Please welcome "Georgie" to SHS in 2023!
"Georgie" will made his debut at the 2023 Fall Sports Awards.
